1994
This is a series that will attempt to Sport(ify) music by creating a 5 member All-Pro/All League/All Star team (Sort of like the NBA first team all-stars) for each year in Music starting with 1964. It will rely heavily on Top 20 Hits from the year but also take into account Concert Tours, Music awards, Music Videos (MTV Crowd-You Tube), TV, Films, Pop Culture etc…..
Mariah Carey – 4 top 20 hits including the smash DREAM LOVER
Boyz II Men – 2 number ones including "I'll make love to you"
Madonna – 3 top 3 hits
Janet Jackson – 3 top 10 hits
Pearl Jam – 2 top 20 hits
Just Missing
Ace of Base – (they had a more pop sound) but I thought Pearl Jam whose big album was actually in 1991 and did not produce any chart buster at the time had to my count 4 big hits. They finally hit the charts in 1994. They were so big in the early 1990s it was hard to keep them off
It was in the early 1990s that X music, Alternative Rock, Grunge took off on its own – Billboard at the time started to expand their charts make things more confusing

The reason so many Pearl Jam songs hit the charts at that time is that they hadn't been available as singles before. Some of them hung out on the charts for more than a year despite the late start. They were certainly huge at that point.
ReplyDeleteAce of Base were pretty big but they lose out on a spot because their two biggest hits were in two different years (1993 and 1994).
I'd actually put Boyz II Men at number one since their two number one hits spent a total of 20 weeks at the top.
