PEAK MUSIC 1989

his is a series that will attempt to Sport(ify) music by creating a 5 member All-Pro/All League/All Star team (Sort of like the NBA first team all-stars) for each year in Music starting with 1964. It will rely heavily on Top 20 Hits from the year but also take into account Concert Tours, Music awards, Music Videos (MTV Crowd-You Tube), TV, Films, Pop Culture etc…..

1989

I failed to mention in a previous blog a few other ways on how America consumed its music. In the late 1980s BET had gotten into the Music Video business big time. Casey Kasem's America Top 40 ended its first run in 1988. Kasem would come back to host in 1998.

This was a year dominated by a few artists

New Kids on the Block – 6 top 10 hits

Madonna – 3 top 2 hits

Paula Abdul – 3 top 3 hits

Bon Jovi – 3 top 10 hits

Milli Vanilli – 4 top 2 hits – I know they did not sing the songs – they were front actors who danced and it was the unseen singer who sang  the produced hits. I don’t care what anyone says Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs and 763 home runs – he did it – I saw it with my own eyes.

Just Missing – Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown with 3 top 10 hits

  1. Man, it's tough to crack this year! Agree about Milli Vanilli being there. I might bump Bon Jovi for Bobby Brown or even Richard Marx, but it's tough to call.

  2. Lot of artists I didn't like at the top this year.
