This is a series that will attempt to Sport(ify) music by creating a 5 member All-Pro/All League/All Star team (Sort of like the NBA first team all-stars) for each year in Music starting with 1964. It will rely heavily on Top 20 Hits from the year but also take into account Concert Tours, Music awards, Music Videos (MTV Crowd-You Tube), TV, Films, Pop Culture etc…..
1981 – MTV
We are coming to my prime high school days and my Memory does not coincide with the Top of the Charts. I guess memory is something that is fluid. Now for sports – my memory for years was based on the Encyclopedia knowledge of books and Sports Cards and watching TV (now Youtube) that help me remember the players, the games and the stats.
With music, which mostly dealt with hearing (until MTV) and deals with the emotions of reminiscing and sentimentalism. i.e They Are Playing Our Song.
Just as seeing a Baseball Card (1977 Topps George Foster or Dave Parker) from the past invokes a certain emotion or memory in me and hearing a song invokes from the same past invokes an emotion or memory only differently.
Hall Oates – They had 3 number one hit including the silly "Kiss on My List". I loved the Hall &Oates of the 70s – "She's Gone" is just an incredible song that drops the words Carbon and Monoxide in it. For me their creative genius was that. In the 1980s the produce silly 'earworm" songs that probably paid their bills.
Rolling Stones – 2 top 20 hits, including "Start Me Up" which went to No 2. – I swore this was a late 1970s song
Rick Springfield – 2 top 20 hits including "Jessie Girl"
Journey – 2 top 10 hits including "Don't Stop Believing" which only went to No 9.
Foreigner – 2 top 10 hits including "Urgent"

Yeah, the early 80s were weird in that you had records which were very popular and are still well remembered today, such as "Tempted" and "What I Like About You", which didn't even make the top 40.
ReplyDeleteList looks good.
