This is a series that will attempt to Sport(ify) music by creating a 5 member All-Pro/All League/All Star team (Sort of like the NBA first team all-stars) for each year in Music starting with 1964. It will rely heavily on Top 20 Hits from the year but also take into account Concert Tours, Music awards, Music Videos (MTV Crowd-You Tube), TV, Films, Pop Culture etc…..
1971
Yes, it is the Osmonds 3 top 10 hits plus 1 number one(and Donny had hits on his own – 2 top ten hits including "Go away little girl")
Marvin Gaye = 3 top 15 hits including "What is going on which hit number 2
Temptations – 2 top 20 hits including "Just my imagination" which hit number 1
Jackson 5 with 4 top 20 hits
Three Dog Night with 3 top 10 hits including "Joy to the World"
I was tempted to have the Rolling Stones at number 5 but they only had one big hit in 1971 "Brown Sugar"
With the Beatles gone – I will explain the all-time scoring system to come up with the all-time PEAK MUSIC performers. The Beatles charted 7 times and amassed 31 points (in the 5-4-3-2-1 point system) so there total point tally is 224 points (this was sort of like Bill James simple runs created method – OBP x SLUG). I don't think anyone will top those numbers but we will see.

What about the Carpenters? Three hits that peaked at #2 or #3.
ReplyDeleteThat might have been a miss or at least a miss not to mention them - I did like the song Superstar - but no song hit number 1 - The had 2 number 2s.
