A Tale of Two catcher’s named John.
It was the best of times and the worst of times. But it was mostly the worst of times for John Stearns (#434) and John Ellis (#642). They played a combined 24 years in the majors but never did either set foot in the post season. Ellis started his career with the Yankees a few years after the end of the great Yankee Dynasty. Stearns started his career with the Phillies in 1974 but was gone before the 3 Division Championship run by the Phillies in 1976. Oh, yeah he also retired in 1984 with the Mets, 2 years before 1986 Mets would become World Champions.
